You may have heard of the STEM initiative, but we have added to that and created what we call "STEAMS":Construct2 example game event

Hey kids, read this:Kids create video games

Do you want to learn how to create your own video games with friends that you can play on your computer, iPad, Android devices, and more!

You'll learn how to create games similar to:

  • Angry Birds
  • Plants vs Zombies
  • Donkey Kong
  • Mario Brothers
  • Tower Defense
  • Top-down Shooters
  • Platform Jumpers
  • Side-scrollers
  • and more!

Hey parents, read this:

There is one major criteria for your child to be enrolled in STEAMS:  They must have their own desire to want to learn about technology, and we'll use games to make it fun and exciting.

97% of kids play video games, but how is playing and designing games educational? When kids make games, they are learning the foundations of science, technology, engineering, arts, math, and social skills.

How does all that really relate to creating a game?

  • Science - you learn "game physics" which relate directly to real-world physics
  • Technology - you learn web design, electronics, and computer skills to create games
  • Engineering - engineering works similar virtually as it does in real life
  • Arts (drawing and music) - you learn how to create characters, soundtracks, and sound effects
  • Math - there are a LOT of math variables needed when creating games
  • Social - nothing is more fun than working on a game with your friends!

Just the FAQs:

What are the class sizes?  Class size is limited, allowing only a maximum of 5 STEAMS students per class.  This gives your child a small enough class to have one-on-one with the instructor but enough other children for them to interact and enjoy each other.

What age does my child need to be? The classes are currently for 5th grade to 8th grade students, so typically from age 10 to 14.  If your child is outside that age range but very interested, let us know and we can decide on a case by case basis, but we find having the kids around the same age helps them bond as well.

Where are the classes located?  We teach STEAMS at both Therapy Playground and Discovery Playground in Fayetteville, NC.

What if I miss a class, is there still a tuition fee?  The cost is $128 for four class sessions, if you miss a week then that week is not counted towards the four classes.

What kind of payment options are there?  We accept checks, cash, Mastercard, and Visa.

Does my child need to bring their own laptop?  We do have computers available for your child to use, but if they want to bring their own laptop to use that is fine too.

What does the parent do while the class is happening?  Parents are encouraged to stay and wait in the lobby, but if you do need to leave during class be sure to be back before the time is up.

Are there mostly boys in the classes or are there any girls?  This is definitely not a boys-only club, about half the students are girls who are just as interested in this technology!
